Built a fully-compliant payroll platform addressing the statutory requirements of Kenyan tax law. Handles automatic PAYE computation, NSSF Tier I & II, SHIF, Housing Levy, employer contributions, dynamic payslip generation, and downloadable KRA iTax statutory templates. Uses precise decimal math for financial calculations and cryptographic audit logs.
The problem
Kenyan tax codes change frequently (SHIF and Housing Levy were recently introduced). SMBs lack automated, localized payroll tools — most run on Excel or pay for expensive enterprise software that doesn't handle local statutory edge cases.
The approach
Designed a Next.js dashboard backed by PostgreSQL. Implemented the payroll computation engine with Zod validation and a test suite mapped against official KRA tax tables. Built automated reporting to export XML/Excel templates for the iTax portal. Added support for multiple pay frequencies, variable allowances, and multi-employee bulk processing.
Outcome
Reduced monthly payroll reconciliation from 3 days to under 10 minutes for active clients. Zero compliance errors across PAYE, NSSF, SHIF, and Housing Levy calculations.
