Engineer first.
Generalist by necessity.
I'm Johnn Nalwa — a full-stack software engineer who has spent the last few years shipping production systems across very different domains: payroll for Kenyan SMBs, real-time video infrastructure for AI analytics, low-latency NLP pipelines for finance, and clinical iOS apps for rheumatology.
What ties it together is the kind of work I look for: problems where the off-the-shelf answer is wrong, where correctness costs real money or real outcomes, and where the difference between a good build and a great one is measurable in milliseconds, payslips, or patient minutes.
I run lean. I write TypeScript, Python, C++, Swift, and a lot of SQL. I prefer Postgres over the fashionable database, Redis over a new message bus, and a small server over a fleet of services until the workload genuinely demands otherwise.
The journey so far.
Fullstack Developer
Building internal automation and custom software for an audit and accounting firm. Work spans process automation, compliance-critical computation, data pipelines, and client-facing web tools — replacing manual spreadsheet workflows with software that actually scales.
Software Engineering Intern
Worked on internal systems and data tooling at the national agricultural research body's headquarters. Gained hands-on experience with production government-facing software and regulated data environments.
Freelance Fullstack Developer
Independent software development across web, mobile, and systems. Projects include a Kenyan payroll compliance platform, a pharmaceutical company website and mobile app (elpipharmltd.co.ke), a real-time RTSP video proxy in C++, a low-latency FinBERT trading signal engine, and a clinical iOS calculator app for rheumatologists.
Three years of building things that work in production. If you have a problem that needs the same, I'd like to hear about it.
